This work was inspired in a moment when I was unceremoniously dragged into bitter politics. I had been volunteering at a cultural space for several years and was helping run the organisation as a board member. After 3 years our team was tired of the work involved and wanted a new team to take over. The organisation depended and functioned based on free association. However, during this transition the darker side of the community came forth. The possibility to steer the organisation in a specific direction blinded people from the true essence of the place. Factions were formed and actions were taken to side line members of the community from participating. The idealistic bubble popped – power had arrive.
Power has the same effect everywhere it appears – it corrupts. This struggle is a basic tenet of the human condition. Everyday, all across the world, there are battles, big and small, being fought for this ephemeral state of being. It is a wonder perhaps if they are unaware of its transient nature. With this work I implore people to reflect on their own conflicts, both internal and external, and find the Other.
Life is short but Time marches on and the Cycle will continue.
