taste the music
context
The OVERKILL Festival wanted to open the 2022 edition with a multisensorial rave – a dance party where all the senses are stimulated – designed with and including the deaf and hard of hearing community. For this party we were commissioned to design and prepare a menu that tastes like the music of the DJs. We were officially Taste Jockeys!
process
nature rave
We proceeded to investigate the music for ourselves. For me, this involved making a playlist and going for a 3 hour walk in the woods. (Brainstorming surrounded by nature is highly recommended!)
brainstorm
We came back from our investigations with our feelings connected to the different genres of music. We proceeded to convert these into keywords. With the entire team we reviewed interviews of the DJs and their personal input to the concept. With this enriched input, ideas were generated.
concepts
The ideas for the dishes were filtered based on their ease of production, method of presentation, every allergen friendliness, connection to the music and with the budget in mind as well. The line-up was also thematically scripted into a 5-course meal.
production
Preparation began 1 week in advance with the order of supplies and equipment. On the day of the party a marathon 21 hour shift began at 09:00 with a long grocery list. 100 portions of the 5 dishes were prepared and transported to the location with a car and a cargo bike. Big thanks to Pierre Kocher & Eva de Wit for their help.

* hiccups
The coffee ice cubes didn’t work. This was because the freezer we were using wasn’t powerful enough and was fully stocked.
The meringues were burnt! The oven we were using needed attention and this was unaccounted for in planning this dish. We improvised with sweet potato cookies with the connection to the African polyrhythms in the music.
The sorbet sticks were thankfully saved by the large walk in freezer at the location of the party.

We started with the dishes at 05:00. We are in enormous debt to Pauline Strasters for her support in pushing us through to the finish line. 06:30 in bed.
