It is hot everywhere in the north. Spain is burning. It is cold elsewhere. Australians are seeing snow for the first time in their lives. The climate has changed. And yet, life must go on. We have to live, learn, share, make, love and survive. This Open Call is an attempt at trying to make a change for the better. My sculpture is an attempt at helping further this message.
I want people to understand how nature works. Wood used to be a tree and wood is now a storehouse of CO2. People need to appreciate this fact and not treat it as trash. Every single piece of wood around us is helping the climate situation. Just as long as it remains wood however. If it becomes fire and smoke then it will exacerbate the situation. My work is a plea to consider this fragility. CO2 is just temporarily transformed into wood. The longer the wood stays wood, the better we can mitigate the change.
My work is an attempt at educating the public. I want to show people that one’s waste can be another’s treasure. Don’t throw stuff away; there is no ‘away’. Try to find people that might have use for the material. There is a small possibility that an artist might make something out of it.
This work titled ‘a cord ding’ [(ding (nl) = thing (en)] represents a section of a tree trunk. The title is a nod to the cord – a unit of measurement of dry firewood used in the United States and Canada. A cord of wood is a stack corresponding to 4’ x 8’ x 4’ or 1.22m x 2.44m x 1.22m. A cord occupies a volume of 128 feet3 or 3.62 m3. A cord of wood sequesters approximately 945 kg of CO2 per year. (For comparison, an average car emits 4600 metric tons of CO2 per year.) A cord of wood therefore holds about 258 kg of carbon.
Treehouse NDSM occupies an area of approximately 1 acre or 4046 m2. If you were to temporarily move it out of its current place, and instead plant a small forest, then you would grow about 16 cords’ worth of forest in a year. Or you would sequester about 15 metric tons of CO2 per year. Or cancel the emissions of about 3225 cars per year.
The associate exhibition with the Open Call is planned for 25 days. You can grow about 1 cord per acreage of forest in that time. My sculpture represents exactly 1/25th the volume of forest growth. In other words, if a forest were growing on the grounds of Treehouse NDSM, this is how much wood would grow everyday. This sculpture represents a sequestration of just 111 grams of CO2 per day. Or 2.8 kg of CO2 for the duration of the exhibition.
